Description

Nexterm through 1.2.2-BETA contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated users to hibernate, resume, or terminate other users' remote sessions via session lifecycle routes. Attackers who obtain a session ID can call the hibernate, resume, or DELETE connection endpoints to disrupt live SSH, RDP, VNC, or SFTP sessions.

Executive Summary

Nexterm through 1.2.2-BETA has a missing authorization flaw in session lifecycle routes. Authenticated users can hibernate, resume, or terminate other users' remote sessions (SSH, RDP, VNC, SFTP) by using session IDs. The endpoints did not verify session ownership, allowing any user with a session ID to disrupt active sessions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for unauthorized hibernate, resume, or DELETE requests to the /connections/:id endpoints in Nexterm logs. Check for multiple failed attempts or unexpected session terminations. Review access logs for non-owner users performing these actions.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with a session ID can disrupt critical remote sessions, causing loss of access to servers or services. This may lead to unauthorized session termination, data loss, or service disruption. Users with read-only permissions could also terminate sessions, exacerbating the risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive session data. Under GDPR, unauthorized disruption of sessions may constitute a breach of data integrity and confidentiality. HIPAA requires strict access controls for protected health information; session hijacking could expose such data. The lack of authorization checks undermines security measures required by both standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Nexterm to the latest patched version. If updating is not possible, restrict access to session lifecycle endpoints by implementing ownership validation. Remove read-only permissions for session ID access to prevent unauthorized session termination.
