Description

Highflame ramparts 0.8.1 through 0.8.10 contains a security scan bypass vulnerability that allows attackers to hide malicious payloads because collect_bundle_siblings and walk_bundle_subdir skip nested directories and .pyc files. Attackers can distribute a skill bundle with an unchecked-hash .pyc under scripts/<subdir>/__pycache__/ that ramparts silently ignores, while CPython executes it when the skill runs.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Highflame ramparts versions 0.8.1 through 0.8.10. It allows attackers to bypass security scans by hiding malicious payloads in nested directories or .pyc files. The functions collect_bundle_siblings and walk_bundle_subdir skip these files, so ramparts ignores them while CPython executes the malicious code when the skill runs.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, scan your system for .pyc files in __pycache__ directories within skill bundles. Use commands like 'find /path/to/skills -name "__pycache__" -type d' to locate these directories. Then check for unexpected .pyc files using 'ls -la scripts/*/__pycache__/' in skill directories. Ramparts itself may miss these files, so manual inspection or alternative tools are recommended.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your system without detection. Malicious .pyc files in __pycache__ directories can run commands like os.system('whoami>pwn') when the skill is executed. This bypasses ramparts' security checks, allowing hidden threats to go unnoticed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could undermine compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing malicious payloads to bypass security scans undetected. GDPR requires data protection and security measures, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. The bypass enables attackers to hide malicious code in .pyc files, which ramparts ignores, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or execution of harmful commands.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Ramparts to the latest version beyond 0.8.10. Remove any unrecognized .pyc files in __pycache__ directories. Audit all skill bundles for suspicious files. Consider using alternative scanners or manual code review for .pyc files. Monitor for unusual activity in MCP servers or skills.
