Description

FFmpeg 5.0 through 9.0.2 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the IMF demuxer that allows attackers to open files outside the package via unvalidated ASSETMAP Path elements. Attackers can supply a crafted IMF package with '..' or absolute paths to demux local MXF files, probe file existence and size, or trigger server-side requests.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-120210 is a path traversal vulnerability in FFmpeg versions 5.0 through 9.0.2 affecting the IMF demuxer. It allows attackers to supply crafted IMF packages with unvalidated ASSETMAP Path elements containing '..' or absolute paths. This enables access to files outside the intended package, probing local MXF files, or triggering server-side requests.

Detection Guidance

Check FFmpeg version with 'ffmpeg -version' to see if it falls within 5.0 to 9.0.2. Monitor network traffic for IMF package processing or unusual file access patterns. Review logs for failed IMF demuxer operations or path traversal attempts in ASSETMAP files.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on your system, probe file existence or sizes, or initiate unauthorized server-side requests. If you process IMF packages with FFmpeg, malicious packages could lead to information disclosure or denial of service.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to files outside intended directories. Attackers may probe or access sensitive files, including those containing personal or health data, which could lead to data breaches or violations of confidentiality requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FFmpeg to a version beyond 9.0.2. Disable IMF demuxer processing if not required. Implement input validation for ASSETMAP files to block paths containing '..' or absolute paths. Monitor for exploitation attempts in logs.
