Description

An information disclosure vulnerability in the Forocoches comments editor that allows an attacker to obtain unauthorised user information by inserting an image containing a malicious external URL into a comment. When a victim views the discussion thread, their browser automatically sends an HTTP/HTTPS request to the server controlled by the attacker, who can then collect information such as the source IP address, the User-Agent header, the date and time of access, and other metadata derived from the request, thereby compromising the user’s privacy.

Executive Summary

This is an information disclosure vulnerability in the Forocoches comments editor. An attacker can insert an image with a malicious external URL into a comment. When a victim views the discussion thread, their browser automatically sends a request to the attacker's server, exposing metadata like IP address, User-Agent, and access time, compromising user privacy.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unexpected outbound HTTP/HTTPS requests from user browsers to external domains when viewing comment sections. Check server logs for unusual image URL requests in comments. Use browser developer tools to inspect network activity for suspicious image loads.

Impact Analysis

If you use Forocoches and view a comment containing the malicious image, your browser will send data to the attacker's server. This could reveal your IP address, device details, and browsing time, potentially leading to privacy breaches or targeted attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing personal data (IP addresses, User-Agent) without consent. For HIPAA, if user data is linked to health discussions, it may breach protected health information rules. Organizations must address this to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Forocoches comments editor to the latest patched version provided by the Forocoches team. Disable image embedding in comments until patched. Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict external resource loading. Review and sanitize all existing comments for malicious URLs.
