Executive Summary

This vulnerability in IBM MQ 9.4.5.0 through 9.4.5.1 allows an authenticated user to send a specially crafted message that crashes applications consuming the message. This results in a denial of service as the affected applications become unavailable.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves monitoring for crashes in IBM MQ consuming applications after receiving crafted messages. Check application logs for unexpected terminations or errors related to message processing. Ensure IBM MQ versions 9.4.5.0 to 9.4.5.1 are identified and upgraded to 10.0.0.0.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could disrupt services relying on IBM MQ by causing consuming applications to crash. This may lead to downtime, loss of data processing capabilities, and potential service interruptions for users dependent on the messaging system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by causing disruptions in data processing systems. A denial of service may lead to unauthorized access or loss of availability of personal or health data, violating GDPR's integrity and availability principles and HIPAA's access control requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update IBM MQ to a version beyond 9.4.5.1 to address the vulnerability. Monitor consuming applications for crashes after receiving messages. Restrict user permissions to reduce the risk of exploitation.
