Description

The Directorist: AI-Powered Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 8.10.2.1. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to delete arbitrary business directory listings, including those owned by other users and posts in publish, draft, or private status. The nonces guarding the endpoint do not constitute an authorization barrier because both directorist_nonce and atbdp_nonce_js are exposed to all logged-in users via wp_localize_script.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass in the Directorist WordPress plugin up to version 8.10.2.1. It allows authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher to delete any business directory listing, even those owned by others or in any publish status. The issue occurs because the plugin exposes nonces (directorist_nonce and atbdp_nonce_js) to all logged-in users, which attackers can misuse to bypass authorization checks.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Directorist plugin versions up to 8.10.2.1. Look for unauthorized deletion of listings or suspicious activity from subscriber-level accounts. Review server logs for POST requests to /wp-json/directorist/v1/listings/delete or similar endpoints.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Directorist plugin, attackers could delete your business listings or others' listings without permission. This could disrupt your directory, cause data loss, or damage your reputation. The impact is higher if you rely on the plugin for critical business listings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized deletion of sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR (data integrity) or HIPAA (protected health information). If listings contain regulated data, their deletion without authorization may result in compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Directorist plugin to the latest version beyond 8.10.2.1 immediately. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Review user roles and permissions to restrict subscriber-level access to sensitive functions.
