Integer Overflow Leading to Privilege Escalation in MediaTek Display

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-20533, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-05

Last updated on: 2026-10-09

Assigner: MediaTek, Inc.

Description

In display, there is a possible escalation of privilege due to an integer overflow. This could lead to local escalation of privilege if a malicious actor has already obtained the System privilege. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS11296678; Issue ID: MSV-9167.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the display component that could allow an attacker with System privilege to escalate privileges further. Exploitation does not require user interaction.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires specific MediaTek chipset firmware inspection. Check for MediaTek display driver versions and look for integer overflow patterns in display-related processes. No direct commands are provided in the CVE details.

Impact Analysis

If you are a user with System privilege access, an attacker could exploit this to gain higher privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise or unauthorized actions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability involves a possible escalation of privilege due to an integer overflow in display components. If exploited, it could allow a malicious actor with System privilege to gain further unauthorized access. This may impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA by potentially enabling unauthorized data access or modification, though specific compliance impacts depend on system configuration and data handling practices.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the patch identified as ALPS11296678 to address the integer overflow issue in the display component. Ensure the System privilege is not granted to untrusted actors to prevent potential escalation of privilege.
