Out of Bounds Write in MediaTek Device Driver

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-20544, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-05

Last updated on: 2026-10-09

Assigner: MediaTek, Inc.

Description

In meta, there is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local escalation of privilege, if an attacker has physical access to the device, with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS11049530 / ALPS11480843; Issue ID: MSV-7935.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a local privilege escalation issue in a device's meta component. It allows an attacker with physical access to write beyond allocated memory due to missing bounds checks. No user interaction or additional privileges are required for exploitation.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for MediaTek chipset devices with outdated firmware. Use system logs to identify devices with meta component issues. Physical inspection may be needed for devices with physical access requirements.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain higher privileges on your device, potentially enabling them to take control of system functions. Physical access to the device is required for this attack.

Compliance Impact

The provided CVE data does not specify any direct impact on compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA. The vulnerability involves a possible out of bounds write due to missing bounds check, which could lead to local privilege escalation with physical access. No user interaction or additional privileges are required for exploitation.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the patch provided by MediaTek with Patch ID ALPS11049530 or ALPS11480843 to address the missing bounds check issue.
