CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an SQL Injection vulnerability where a low privileged user can execute arbitrary commands by sending specially crafted requests to affected Fortinet FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager products.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves SQL injection in Fortinet FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager products. Detection requires checking for unusual database queries or unauthorized command execution attempts. Review logs for suspicious input patterns like single quotes, semicolons, or SQL keywords (SELECT, UNION, DROP). Use network monitoring tools to inspect HTTP requests for malformed payloads targeting these systems.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data, modify or delete database records, or execute system commands with elevated privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update FortiAnalyzer and FortiManager to the latest patched versions immediately. Disable low-privileged user access temporarily if possible. Monitor network traffic for unusual SQL-like query patterns. Apply Fortinet's official security patches as soon as they are released.
