Executive Summary

This is a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It occurs in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) and can be triggered by an unauthenticated BGP peer sending crafted BGP route updates when the BGP Monitoring Protocol (BMP) is enabled. This may lead to a denial of service and potential root-level command execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the presence of the BGP Monitoring Protocol (BMP) feature and monitoring for unusual BGP route updates. Inspect Junos OS configurations for BMP settings using show configuration protocols bmp. Monitor rpd logs for crashes or anomalies with show log messages | match rpd. Check for unexpected BGP peer connections or route updates with show bgp neighbor and show route advertising-protocol bgp.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the routing protocol daemon, causing network disruption. In severe cases, it may allow arbitrary code execution with root privileges, leading to full system compromise and unauthorized access to sensitive data or network control.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential exposure of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable BGP Monitoring Protocol (BMP) if enabled. Update Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved to the latest patched version. Restrict BGP peer connections to trusted sources only.
