Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow in the srxpfe process of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series devices. An unauthenticated attacker can send a specially crafted packet through a configured GRE tunnel to execute arbitrary code with root privileges or crash the system, causing a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series devices and involves the srxpfe process. Detection requires checking for unusual activity in GRE tunnel traffic or unexpected behavior in the srxpfe process. Juniper recommends monitoring for crashes or abnormal resource usage in the srxpfe process and inspecting GRE tunnel configurations for malformed packets.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control of your Juniper SRX device, steal sensitive data, or disrupt network operations. The high CVSS scores indicate a severe risk of remote code execution and system compromise without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code as root or cause denial of service via crafted packets. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements for data protection and access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS security patch from Juniper Networks immediately to address the buffer overflow in the srxpfe process. Disable any unused GRE tunnels on SRX Series devices until patched.
