Assigner: Nozomi Networks Inc.

Description

A signature verification vulnerability was discovered in the update installation functionality due to inconsistent validation of the update bundle contents. An attacker with administrative privileges can remotely supply a crafted update bundle that passes signature verification but runs an unsigned script when the bundle is installed. The script runs with root privileges, allowing the attacker to read or modify sensitive data, change the appliance configuration, or shut down the appliance.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a signature verification flaw in the update installation process of Nozomi Networks Guardian and CMC appliances. An attacker with admin rights can craft a malicious update bundle that bypasses signature checks but runs an unsigned script with root privileges during installation. This allows unauthorized access to sensitive data, system configuration changes, or shutdown of the appliance.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could let an attacker read or modify sensitive data, change system settings, or shut down the appliance entirely. Since the script runs with root privileges, the impact is severe and could disrupt operations or lead to data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Failure to address it may result in non-compliance penalties or data protection breaches.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Restrict access to the web management interface to prevent unauthorized administrative access.
  • Review and remove unnecessary administrative accounts to reduce potential attack vectors.
  • Only install update bundles from trusted Nozomi Networks sources to avoid malicious bundles.
  • Upgrade to Guardian and CMC versions 26.4.0 or later to address the vulnerability.
