Description

The PhastPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Server-Side Request Forgery in all versions up to, and including, 3.10 This is due to the scripts service endpoint constructing its URL whitelist dynamically from the attacker-controlled HTTP 'Host' header. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to spoof the header to match any target URL, bypassing the whitelist and forcing the server to make HTTP requests to arbitrary internal or external destinations and return the response content.

Executive Summary

The PhastPress WordPress plugin up to version 3.10 has a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability. The plugin's scripts service endpoint uses the HTTP Host header to dynamically create a URL whitelist. Attackers can manipulate this header to bypass the whitelist and force the server to make HTTP requests to any internal or external URL, returning the response content.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for unusual outbound HTTP requests from your WordPress server, especially those targeting internal or external destinations not expected by the PhastPress plugin. Check server logs for requests to the scripts service endpoint (/wp-json/phastpress/scripts) with unexpected Host headers.

Impact Analysis

An unauthenticated attacker could exploit this to access internal systems, exfiltrate sensitive data, or interact with other services on your network. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further attacks against your infrastructure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the PhastPress plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, disable the plugin until a patch is released. Review server firewall rules to block unauthorized outbound requests from the WordPress server. Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity.
