Description

The Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent (GPA) before 7.4 for macOS is affected by a local privilege escalation vulnerability within the wapptunneld component. The vulnerability is caused by a lack of input validation when the service uses network interface names to execute system utilities, resulting in command injection. An unprivileged local user with permissions to modify network interface names can exploit this by renaming a network interface to include a malicious shell payload via System Settings. When the "Log out from your IdP" action is subsequently triggered, the wapptunneld service processes the poisoned interface name, leading to the execution of arbitrary commands with root privileges.

Executive Summary

This is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent (GPA) for macOS before version 7.4. It exists in the wapptunneld component due to insufficient input validation when processing network interface names. An attacker with local access can rename a network interface to include a malicious shell command. When the 'Log out from your IdP' action is triggered, the service executes the crafted interface name as a command, gaining root privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check the version of the Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent (GPA) on macOS systems. If the version is below 7.4, the system is vulnerable. Look for the wapptunneld component and verify if it processes network interface names without proper input validation.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent on macOS before version 7.4, an unprivileged local attacker could exploit this to gain full control of your system. This could allow them to install malware, steal data, or perform other malicious actions with administrative rights.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with standards like GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized local privilege escalation to root access on macOS systems running the Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent. Unauthorized root access may lead to data breaches or unauthorized modifications, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Akamai Guardicore Platform Agent (GPA) to version 7.4 or later on all macOS systems. Ensure no unprivileged local users have permissions to modify network interface names. Review and restrict access to System Settings where interface names can be altered.
