Description

Cacti is an open source performance and fault management framework. Prior to version 1.2.31, a User Enumeration vulnerability allows an attacker to identify valid usernames on the Cacti service. When a user attempts to log in, the application returns slightly different error messages depending on whether the provided username exists in the system. When username exists on Cacti, in the response, they see Access Denied! Login failed. When it does not exist on Cacti, they see Access Denied! Login Failed. The only difference between the responses is the capitalization of the letter "f" in the word failed. This issue has been patched in version 1.2.31.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-49442 is a User Enumeration vulnerability in Cacti versions prior to 1.2.31. It allows attackers to identify valid usernames by exploiting subtle differences in error messages during login attempts. When a username exists, the system returns 'Access Denied! Login failed' with a lowercase 'f' in 'failed'. For non-existent usernames, it returns 'Access Denied! Login Failed' with an uppercase 'F'. This inconsistency helps attackers determine valid accounts.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring login attempts and analyzing error message responses for the specific difference in capitalization of the word 'failed' in error messages. Automated scripts can be used to send login requests with various usernames and check for the slight difference in error message responses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can impact you by enabling attackers to identify valid usernames on your Cacti service. With known usernames, attackers can launch targeted brute-force or phishing attacks, increasing the risk of unauthorized access to your system. It compromises account security and may lead to data breaches or further exploitation of system resources.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may affect compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing user account information, which could be considered a breach of confidentiality requirements. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A successful exploitation could lead to non-compliance penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Cacti to version 1.2.31 or later to patch the vulnerability. Additionally, review and enhance authentication mechanisms to ensure consistent error messages regardless of username validity to prevent user enumeration.
