Description

Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit. Prior to Asterisk 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 20.7-cert11, 22.8-cert3, `ast_loggrabber` executes a `Python script` from the world-writable `/tmp` directory. An attacker already authorized to open a shell session on the Asterisk server may place a malicious script there and gain elevated privileges or execute code when an administrator runs `ast_loggrabber` as a user with elevated privileges. This issue is fixed in Asterisk 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 20.7-cert11, 22.8-cert3.

Executive Summary

Asterisk is a telephony toolkit with a vulnerability in versions before 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1, and Certified Asterisk 20.7-cert11, 22.8-cert3. The issue involves the `ast_loggrabber` tool executing a Python script from the world-writable /tmp directory. An attacker with shell access can place a malicious script there, which runs with elevated privileges when an admin executes `ast_loggrabber`.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized or suspicious Python scripts in the /tmp directory. Run commands like 'ls -la /tmp' to inspect files and 'find /tmp -name "*.py" -type f' to locate Python scripts. Verify if ast_loggrabber is running with elevated privileges.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected Asterisk version, an attacker with local access could execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This could lead to full system compromise, unauthorized access to sensitive data, or disruption of telephony services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations using affected Asterisk versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Asterisk to the latest patched versions (20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 or Certified Asterisk 20.7-cert11, 22.8-cert3). Remove any untrusted files from /tmp and restrict write permissions to prevent unauthorized script execution.
