Authentication Bypass in FileRise Due to Missing Setup Marker

Description

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.16.0, FileRise treats an empty or missing users.txt file as a fresh installation even after setup previously completed. If storage loss, truncation, or another failure empties the user store, an unauthenticated remote caller can detect that setup mode reopened and create the next initial administrator account through the setup flow. The application lacked a durable setup-complete marker independent of the mutable user store. This issue is fixed in version 3.16.0.

Executive Summary

FileRise before version 3.16.0 has a flaw where an empty or missing users.txt file incorrectly triggers setup mode even after installation. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to detect the reset and create a new admin account through the setup process if the user database is lost or corrupted.

Detection Guidance

Check if the users.txt file is empty or missing in the FileRise installation directory. If the file is empty or missing, the application may treat it as a fresh installation and allow unauthorized setup.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full administrative access to your FileRise instance without authentication. This could lead to unauthorized file access, modification, or deletion, compromising data integrity and confidentiality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Compliance failures may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FileRise to version 3.16.0 or later to address the issue. Ensure the users.txt file is present and contains valid user entries to prevent unauthorized setup.
