Path Traversal in FileRise Web File Manager

Description

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.19.0, FileRise validates the complete folderName string but does not reject dot-dot path segments before FolderModel::createFolder() constructs and creates the destination. An authenticated low-privileged user with a valid CSRF token and create or owner permission on the parent can submit traversal segments to POST /api/folder/createFolder.php and create directories outside UPLOAD_DIR wherever the web-server account can write. This issue is fixed in version 3.19.0.

Executive Summary

FileRise before version 3.19.0 has a path traversal vulnerability. Authenticated low-privileged users with create or owner permissions can submit directory traversal sequences in folder names via POST /api/folder/createFolder.php. The application fails to validate and reject these sequences before creating directories, allowing users to write files outside the intended UPLOAD_DIR wherever the web server has write access.

Detection Guidance

Check FileRise logs for POST requests to /api/folder/createFolder.php containing dot-dot segments (e.g., ../) in folderName parameters. Inspect directory structures under UPLOAD_DIR for unexpected parent-level directories. Verify file permissions of the web-server account to identify unauthorized write access.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could create directories or files outside the intended upload directory, potentially overwriting system files, storing malicious content, or escalating privileges. This could lead to data corruption, unauthorized access, or further exploitation of the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized file creation or modification, potentially violating data integrity and access control requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FileRise to version 3.19.0 or later. Review and restrict permissions of the web-server account to prevent directory traversal. Monitor POST /api/folder/createFolder.php requests for suspicious folderName values containing ../ segments.
