Executive Summary

This is an Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File vulnerability in Apache Answer versions up to 2.0.2. Full API keys are written to application logs during every authenticated request, allowing anyone with access to those logs to recover and reuse active bearer credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check application logs for full API keys in plaintext. Search for patterns like 'Authorization: Bearer' or similar tokens in log files. Use commands like 'grep -r "Bearer" /var/log/' or 'find / -type f -name "*.log" -exec grep -l "Bearer" {} \;' to scan logs.

Impact Analysis

If you use Apache Answer versions 2.0.2 or earlier, attackers with log access could steal API keys and potentially gain unauthorized access to your systems or data. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized actions, or further compromise of your environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in non-compliance due to potential data breaches and unauthorized credential usage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Answer to version 2.0.3 or later. Rotate all exposed API keys immediately. Restrict log file access to authorized personnel only. Review and sanitize existing logs to remove any stored credentials.
