Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') vulnerability in Apache Answer. This issue affects Apache Answer: through 2.0.2. The importer stores imported question bodies as raw HTML without passing them through the normal Markdown-to-HTML sanitization path, so attacker-controlled HTML embedded in an imported data source is persisted and rendered to all viewers (including privileged users) as stored XSS. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.0.3, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This is a Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Apache Answer versions up to 2.0.2. It occurs because imported question bodies are stored as raw HTML without proper sanitization. Attacker-controlled HTML in imported data is saved and later rendered to all users, including privileged ones, enabling stored XSS attacks.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper handling of HTML input in Apache Answer versions through 2.0.2. To detect it, check if your Apache Answer instance is running a version prior to 2.0.3. Use commands like 'curl -s http://your-server/version' or inspect the application's version file.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into imported data, which would execute when viewed by other users. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or unauthorized actions performed on behalf of users. Privileged users are also affected, increasing the risk of deeper system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing user data through XSS attacks or failing to implement adequate security measures. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited. Both standards require protection against unauthorized data access or modification.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Answer to version 2.0.3 or later immediately. This fixes the XSS vulnerability by ensuring proper sanitization of imported HTML content. No temporary mitigations are suggested beyond upgrading.
