Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in openEQUELLA versions before 2026.1. The system.execute() function in the scripting engine allows users to run operating system commands without validation or restrictions on permitted executables. A user with script creation or editing privileges can exploit this to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the openEQUELLA service account.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with script access could execute malicious commands on the server, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, system compromise, or service disruption. This could affect data integrity, confidentiality, and availability, depending on the privileges of the openEQUELLA service account.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade openEQUELLA to version 2026.1 or later to address the lack of command validation in system.execute().

Review and restrict user permissions to prevent unauthorized script creation or editing.

Monitor openEQUELLA service account activity for unusual command execution patterns.
