XML External Entity Injection in openEQUELLA

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-66090, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-29

Last updated on: 2026-10-29

Assigner: MON-CSIRT

Description

In openEQUELLA before 2026.1, the XML parser used for item metadata does not disable external entity resolution. A user permitted to create items (CREATE_ITEM) can submit crafted XML to POST /api/item and cause the server to read arbitrary files accessible to the openEQUELLA service, or make requests to attacker-specified locations (SSRF), including cloud instance metadata services.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an XML External Entity (XXE) flaw in openEQUELLA before version 2026.1. It allows authenticated users with item creation permissions to submit specially crafted XML data via the API. The XML parser does not block external entity resolution, enabling the server to read arbitrary files accessible to the openEQUELLA service or make requests to external locations, including cloud metadata services.

Detection Guidance

Check openEQUELLA server logs for POST requests to /api/item containing XML payloads. Monitor for unusual file access patterns or outbound requests to cloud metadata services. Use network traffic analysis tools to detect SSRF attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with CREATE_ITEM permissions could exploit this to access sensitive files on the server, such as configuration files or internal data. They could also perform Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) to interact with internal systems or cloud services, potentially leading to data breaches or unauthorized actions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines or penalties for non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade openEQUELLA to version 2026.1 or later. Disable external entity resolution in the XML parser configuration. Restrict CREATE_ITEM permissions to trusted users only. Implement network egress controls to block requests to cloud metadata services.
