Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Gitea allows restricted users to search and retrieve issue titles, bodies, and content from repositories owned by users with limited-visibility settings. The issue occurs because the API and web issue-search paths do not treat restricted accounts as anonymous viewers, bypassing visibility policies.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Gitea instance is running a vulnerable version (1.27.2 or earlier). Use commands like 'gitea --version' to verify the version. Additionally, monitor API logs for restricted users performing issue searches on limited-visibility repositories.

Impact Analysis

If you are a Gitea user with limited-visibility repositories, restricted users may access confidential issue content that should be hidden. This could lead to unauthorized exposure of sensitive information, such as issue discussions or internal details.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate compliance requirements for data confidentiality, such as GDPR or HIPAA, by allowing unauthorized access to restricted issue content. Organizations using Gitea must upgrade to version 1.27.3 or later to mitigate this risk.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Gitea to version 1.27.3 or later immediately. This version includes the fix for CVE-2026-68957. After upgrading, review access logs to ensure restricted users no longer have unauthorized access to issue searches in limited-visibility repositories.
