Buffer Overflow in SOEM Due to Unchecked Message Length

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-70388, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-26

Last updated on: 2026-10-26

Assigner: ENISA

Description

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains vulnerabilities where a malicious device on the network can send specially crafted messages that cause the master to write data outside allocated memory boundaries. The software performs arithmetic on message length values without proper validation, allowing negative or extremely large values to bypass safety checks. This can corrupt memory and potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the master system.

CWE ID Description
CWE-191 The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-195 The product uses a signed primitive and performs a cast to an unsigned primitive, which can produce an unexpected value if the value of the signed primitive can not be represented using an unsigned primitive.

Executive Summary

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier has a vulnerability where a malicious device on the network can send specially crafted messages. These messages cause the master system to write data outside its allocated memory due to improper validation of message length values. The software performs arithmetic on these lengths without checking for negative or excessively large values, bypassing safety checks. This can lead to memory corruption and potentially allow arbitrary code execution on the master system.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow an attacker on the same network to execute arbitrary code on the master system running SOEM. This could lead to system crashes, unauthorized access, or control over the affected system. If exploited, it may disrupt operations or compromise sensitive data processed by the master.

Mitigation Strategies

Update SOEM to a version later than 2.0.0 to address memory boundary issues and validate message length values. Monitor network traffic for malformed EtherCAT messages and restrict unauthorized devices from accessing the network.
