Executive Summary

Routinator caches a newly-retrieved Trust Anchor (TA) certificate over HTTPS without validating it first. This means even if the certificate is invalid or malicious, it could overwrite a previously trusted TA certificate in the cache.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to replace a legitimate TA certificate with a malicious one, potentially allowing them to intercept or manipulate RPKI data. This could lead to route hijacking or other network attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Routinator to the latest version to ensure proper validation of TA certificates. Monitor cache files for unexpected overwrites of TA certificates. Review HTTPS traffic logs for unusual certificate retrieval patterns.
