Memory Exhaustion in Gitea Maven Upload Handler

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-73273, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-14

Last updated on: 2026-10-14

Assigner: Gitea Limited

Description

Gitea's Maven upload handler reads checksum uploads entirely into memory and returns before enforcing package-size quotas. An authenticated user with package-publish permission can submit an oversized body to a checksum endpoint despite legitimate checksum values being at most 128 bytes. This bypasses the upload quota on that path and can exhaust server memory.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-73273 is a vulnerability in Gitea's Maven upload handler where the system reads entire checksum uploads into memory before enforcing package-size quotas. An authenticated user with package-publish permission can submit an oversized body to a checksum endpoint despite legitimate checksums being at most 128 bytes. This bypasses upload quotas and can exhaust server memory.

Detection Guidance

Check Gitea server logs for unusually large Maven checksum upload requests or memory exhaustion errors. Monitor for requests exceeding typical checksum sizes (max 128 bytes). Use network inspection tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to capture and analyze Maven upload traffic for oversized payloads.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service (DoS) conditions by consuming excessive server memory. It may cause system slowdowns, crashes, or outages due to uncontrolled resource allocation. Exploitable by any authenticated user with Maven package write access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it is a resource exhaustion issue in Gitea's Maven upload handler. It may indirectly impact compliance if the resulting denial-of-service disrupts systems handling protected data, but no specific regulatory violations are documented in the provided context.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Gitea to version 1.27.3 or later to apply the official fix.
  • Configure reverse proxy (e.g., Nginx, Apache) to enforce strict request body size limits for Maven endpoints.
  • Restrict Maven package write permissions to trusted users only.
  • Monitor server memory usage and network traffic for signs of abuse.
