Executive Summary

This is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Document Gallery WordPress plugin up to version 5.1.1. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize or escape user input before reflecting it in an HTML attribute during an unauthenticated AJAX action. Attackers can exploit this by tricking users into visiting a malicious URL, which executes injected scripts in their browsers.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Document Gallery WordPress plugin version 5.1.1 or earlier is installed. Look for unauthenticated AJAX actions reflecting unsanitized user input in responses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute malicious scripts in the browsers of any visitor, including logged-in administrators. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or unauthorized actions on the WordPress site. Users may unknowingly trigger the attack by clicking a crafted link.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if exploited. Both standards require protecting against such attacks to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the Document Gallery plugin immediately if installed. Monitor network traffic for suspicious AJAX requests. Apply any future patches released by the vendor.
