Description

Domoticz is a free, open source home automation system for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Raspberry Pi. Prior to 2026.3, the `udevices` JSON command handler, `Cmd_UpdateDevices` in `main/WebServerCmds.cpp`, performed no `session.rights` check before invoking a Lua parser script, while its sibling command handlers gate access by role. A low-privilege authenticated user could trigger execution of an existing operator-installed Lua parser script with attacker-controlled input through the `GET /json.htm` endpoint with `type=command` and `param=udevices`. The `script` parameter also lacked a `..` path-traversal guard: `CLuaHandler::executeLuaScript` in `main/LuaHandler.cpp` constructed the filename from the parser directory and the supplied script name before passing it to `luaL_loadfile`. Execution is limited to already-installed valid Lua files; this is not arbitrary code execution, and the advisory states that file-write and upload paths require administrator privileges. This issue is addressed in version 2026.3.

CWE ID Description
CWE-862 The product does not perform an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action.
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Domoticz before version 2026.3 allows a low-privilege authenticated user to execute an existing Lua parser script with attacker-controlled input via the GET /json.htm endpoint. The udevices command handler did not check session rights before invoking the Lua parser, unlike other commands.

Detection Guidance

Check Domoticz version for updates. Monitor logs for unusual Lua script executions via the /json.htm endpoint with type=command and param=udevices. Look for GET requests with script parameter values containing path traversal attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could manipulate the Lua script execution to perform unauthorized actions within the system. This could lead to data leaks, unauthorized access, or system misconfigurations, depending on the Lua script's purpose.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Compliance could be impacted if sensitive data is exposed or altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Domoticz to version 2026.3 or later immediately. Restrict network access to the Domoticz web interface. Review user permissions to ensure low-privilege accounts cannot access sensitive endpoints.
