Time-Based SQL Injection in WP Inventory Manager WordPress Plugin

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-76005, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

The WP Inventory Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via 'sort_order' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 2.5.5 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This can be exploited by a Contributor via the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode embedded in a draft post rendered through preview, without requiring the post to be published.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The WP Inventory Manager plugin for WordPress has a SQL injection vulnerability in versions up to 2.5.5. It allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access to inject malicious SQL queries via the 'sort_order' shortcode attribute. This can extract sensitive database information without needing to publish posts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check for the presence of the WP Inventory Manager plugin version 2.5.5 or lower. Inspect WordPress sites for the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode in draft posts. Monitor database queries for unusual activity or unauthorized access attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. They only need contributor-level access and can exploit this via a draft post preview.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) by allowing access to sensitive user or patient information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Inventory Manager plugin to the latest version. Remove or disable the plugin if no update is available. Restrict contributor-level access to only trusted users. Review draft posts for suspicious shortcode usage and remove unauthorized instances.
