Description

boneIO Black firmware ships with authentication disabled by default. Its management web API listens on all network interfaces and exposes all endpoints without requiring credentials. An unauthenticated remote attacker can fully control the device, causing denial of service, modifying configuration, and operating connected physical circuits. This issue was fixed in version 1.6.0: a device without an administrator account refuses API requests until the owner creates one in the first-run wizard, and every API route is restricted to an authenticated role. Versions before 1.2.0 are based on Debian 10, are no longer supported and cannot be upgraded in place; affected devices should be re-flashed with the 1.6.0 system image.

Executive Summary

The boneIO Black firmware has a critical flaw where authentication is disabled by default. The management web API listens on all network interfaces and allows unauthenticated access to all endpoints. This lets remote attackers gain full control of the device without credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check if the boneIO Black device is running firmware versions before 1.6.0 by inspecting the device interface or querying the API. Scan network interfaces for open ports used by the management web API, typically accessible without authentication. Use commands like nmap to identify exposed endpoints on the device IP.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could cause denial of service, modify device configurations, or operate connected physical circuits. This could lead to unauthorized control of the device and potential physical consequences depending on its use.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the boneIO Black firmware to version 1.6.0 or later to enable authentication and restrict API access. For devices running versions before 1.2.0, re-flash the system with the 1.6.0 image as in-place upgrades are not supported. Ensure an administrator account is created during the first-run setup to enforce authentication.
