boneIO Black Password Exposure via API

Description

boneIO Black stores passwords, including the MQTT broker and web panel passwords, in cleartext. The GET /api/config endpoint returns the full configuration with sub-services passwords exposed. Any authenticated user can call the endpoint and access the administrative passwords in cleartext form. Critically, due to CVE-2026-77053 (authentication disabled by default), an unauthenticated attacker on the same local network can retrieve all passwords. This issue was fixed in version 1.6.0: web panel passwords are stored as salted scrypt hashes in a file readable only by the service account, and the API and logs no longer return secret values. The MQTT broker password has to stay recoverable because the application presents it to the broker as a client; it is kept in a separate file readable only by the service account and is no longer exposed through the API.

Executive Summary

boneIO Black stores passwords in cleartext, including MQTT broker and web panel passwords. The GET /api/config endpoint exposes the full configuration with passwords in plaintext. Even authenticated users can access these passwords, and due to CVE-2026-77053, unauthenticated attackers on the same local network can retrieve them.

Detection Guidance

Check if your boneIO system is running a version prior to 1.6.0 by inspecting the version file or API response. Use network scanning tools to detect unauthenticated access to the GET /api/config endpoint on boneIO devices. Verify if passwords are exposed in plaintext in configuration files or logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain access to administrative passwords, potentially taking control of the boneIO system, intercepting communications via the MQTT broker, or compromising the web panel. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system manipulation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to sensitive data and potential data breaches. Exposure of passwords and system access could result in non-compliance with data protection requirements, leading to legal and financial penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade boneIO to version 1.6.0 or later to address the issue. Ensure authentication is enabled and restrict network access to the device. Review and rotate all exposed passwords, especially MQTT broker and web panel credentials. Remove plaintext password storage and restrict file permissions on configuration files.
