Authentication Bypass in boneIO Black via Brute Force

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-77057, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Assigner: CERT.PL

Description

boneIO Black does not limit authentication attempts on its web interface (POST /api/login) or SSH service, and does not enforce password complexity. An unauthenticated remote attacker can make unlimited brute-force login attempts, potentially compromising user accounts and gaining unauthorized access to the device. This issue was fixed in version 1.6.0: web login attempts are rate-limited per source address and per account, panel passwords must be at least 8 characters long, and SSH allows three authentication attempts per connection with a shortened login grace time.

Executive Summary

boneIO Black lacks authentication attempt limits on its web interface (POST /api/login) and SSH service. It also does not enforce password complexity requirements. This allows unauthenticated remote attackers to perform unlimited brute-force login attempts, potentially gaining unauthorized access to the device.

Detection Guidance

Check for repeated failed login attempts on the boneIO Black web interface (POST /api/login) or SSH service. Monitor logs for excessive authentication failures from a single source or account.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain unauthorized access to the boneIO Black device, potentially compromising user accounts, sensitive data, or device functionality. Unrestricted brute-force attempts may also lead to denial-of-service conditions.

Mitigation Strategies

Update boneIO Black to version 1.6.0 or later to enable rate limiting, enforce password complexity, and restrict SSH login attempts. Temporarily restrict access to the web interface and SSH service if an update is not immediately possible.
