TOCTOU Race Condition in boneIO Black Leading to Local Privilege Escalation

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-77059, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

boneIO Black contains a TOCTOU race condition in the create_timedatectl_sudoers_file() function in boneio/webui/routes/timezone_sudoers.py. The function writes sudoers rules to a predictable temporary file, validates them, then installs them with root privileges. A local attacker can exploit the race window between validation and installation to substitute malicious content, or use the predictable filename for symlink attacks, resulting in arbitrary sudoers rule injection and local privilege escalation to root. This issue was fixed in versionΒ 1.6.0.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a TOCTOU (Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use) race condition in the boneIO Black system. It occurs in the create_timedatectl_sudoers_file() function where sudoers rules are written to a temporary file, validated, and then installed with root privileges. An attacker can exploit the gap between validation and installation to replace the file with malicious content or use a predictable filename for symlink attacks, leading to arbitrary sudoers rule injection and local privilege escalation to root.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows a local attacker to gain root privileges on the affected system. This could lead to full control over the device, unauthorized access to sensitive data, or the ability to execute arbitrary commands with the highest system permissions.

Mitigation Strategies

Update boneIO to version 1.6.0 or later to fix the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, restrict local access to the system to prevent exploitation.
