Description

The Waitlist Woocommerce ( Back in stock notifier ) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'type' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 2.9.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The wp_kses_post filter applied on contributor post save does not prevent this vulnerability because shortcode attribute values are not HTML and pass through kses unchanged; the payload is materialized only at render time when the shortcode is expanded.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Waitlist Woocommerce plugin for WordPress. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'type' shortcode attribute. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users access the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Waitlist Woocommerce plugin versions up to 2.9.1. Inspect WordPress pages or posts for injected scripts in shortcode attributes, particularly the 'type' attribute. Use WordPress admin panel to review contributor-level user activity and recent changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect users to malicious sites. It may also allow unauthorized actions on behalf of users if combined with other vulnerabilities. The impact depends on the attacker's goals and the site's user base.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising user data. For GDPR, it may result in unauthorized access to personal data, triggering reporting requirements. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information, violating compliance. Both require strict data protection measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Waitlist Woocommerce plugin to the latest version beyond 2.9.1. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to users who do not require it. Review and sanitize all shortcode attributes in posts and pages for malicious scripts.
