Buffer Overflow in Okta Credential Provider for Windows

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-78628, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-13

Last updated on: 2026-10-14

Assigner: Okta

Description

The Okta Credential Provider for Windows does not validate a serialized credential buffer before interpreting it as a Kerberos logon structure. The buffer size and packed string offsets are not checked. Processing a malformed buffer can cause the credential provider process to terminate unexpectedly or lead to out-of-bounds memory reads and writes, which may result in the disclosure of adjacent process memory into local system logs.

Executive Summary

The Okta Credential Provider for Windows fails to validate a serialized credential buffer before processing it as a Kerberos logon structure. This means the buffer size and string offsets are not checked for correctness. A malformed buffer can cause the credential provider process to crash or lead to out-of-bounds memory reads and writes, potentially exposing adjacent process memory in system logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to cause the credential provider to crash or leak sensitive memory. This might expose credentials or other sensitive data stored in memory, impacting system security and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security updates or patches provided by Okta for the Okta Credential Provider for Windows to address the buffer validation issue.
