CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL injection vulnerability in the web-based management interface of ClearPass Policy Manager. A low-privileged authenticated remote attacker could exploit it to run arbitrary database commands by injecting malicious SQL queries.

Detection Guidance

To detect SQL injection vulnerabilities in ClearPass Policy Manager, monitor web application logs for unusual SQL query patterns or errors. Use tools like SQLMap to test for injection points in the web interface. Check for HTTP requests containing suspicious payloads such as single quotes, semicolons, or SQL keywords (e.g., UNION, SELECT).

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could allow an attacker to execute unauthorized database commands, potentially leading to data theft, manipulation, or deletion. This may result in unauthorized access to sensitive information or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or breaches, violating compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to non-compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches or updates provided by HPE for ClearPass Policy Manager to address the SQL injection vulnerabilities. Ensure the web-based management interface is not exposed to untrusted networks and restrict access to authorized users only.
