Description

The Paytm Payment Gateway WordPress plugin before 2.8.9 does not verify that payment callbacks genuinely originate from the payment provider when its secret key has not been configured, which is its state immediately after activation, allowing unauthenticated attackers to change the status of arbitrary orders, including marking unpaid orders as paid and reducing stock.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Paytm Payment Gateway WordPress plugin before version 2.8.9. When the plugin's secret key is not configured after activation, it fails to verify if payment callbacks are legitimate. This allows unauthenticated attackers to change order statuses, such as marking unpaid orders as paid or reducing stock levels.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Paytm Payment Gateway WordPress plugin version is below 2.8.9. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files for version details in the WordPress admin panel.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could manipulate order statuses, leading to financial losses from fake payments or incorrect inventory counts. Businesses using the plugin might process orders that were never actually paid for, causing operational and financial disruptions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized order status changes, potentially causing financial discrepancies or data integrity issues. For GDPR, it may impact data accuracy (Article 5) and security of processing (Article 32). For HIPAA, it could affect the integrity of transaction records, a key requirement under the Security Rule.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Paytm Payment Gateway plugin to version 2.8.9 or later immediately. Configure the plugin's secret key to enable proper verification of payment callbacks.
