Buffer Overflow in SOEM Due to Unchecked Device Response Lengths

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82943, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains vulnerabilities where a malicious device can send messages that cause the master to read data from memory locations beyond the intended buffer. The software uses length values from device responses without validating them against actual buffer sizes. An attacker can exploit this to extract up to 64KB of data from the master's memory.

CWE ID Description
CWE-200 The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information.
CWE-125 The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-195 The product uses a signed primitive and performs a cast to an unsigned primitive, which can produce an unexpected value if the value of the signed primitive can not be represented using an unsigned primitive.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier allows a malicious device to send specially crafted messages that trick the master into reading memory outside the intended buffer. The issue occurs because the software uses length values from device responses without checking if they match the actual buffer size. An attacker can exploit this to extract up to 64KB of data from the master's memory.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring network traffic for SOEM protocol messages with inconsistent length fields. Inspect master device logs for buffer overflow warnings or memory access violations. Use network sniffing tools like Wireshark to filter for SOEM traffic and check for malformed packets where length values exceed expected buffer sizes.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker on the same network segment to read sensitive data from the master device's memory. This might include credentials, configuration details, or other confidential information. The impact depends on what data is stored in memory and how the master device is used in your system.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update SOEM to the latest version beyond 2.0.0. Implement input validation to verify length fields against buffer sizes before processing device responses. Restrict network access to SOEM devices using firewalls or VLAN segmentation. Monitor for unusual memory access patterns or data exfiltration attempts.
