Buffer Overflow in SOEM Due to Multi-Segment Data Transfer

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82944, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability in multi-segment data transfers where a malicious device can overflow memory buffers. The software checks the total size only once at the beginning, but doesn't track the cumulative size as multiple segments arrive. An attacker can declare a small initial size to pass validation, then send additional segments that exceed the allocated buffer. This allows the attacker to write controlled data beyond buffer boundaries, potentially enabling code execution.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-120 The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-131 The product does not correctly calculate the size to be used when allocating a buffer, which could lead to a buffer overflow.

Executive Summary

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier has a buffer overflow vulnerability in multi-segment data transfers. The software validates the total size only once at the start but fails to track cumulative size as segments arrive. An attacker can send a small initial size to bypass checks, then send additional segments that exceed the allocated buffer, writing data beyond its boundaries.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system by exploiting the buffer overflow. It may lead to system crashes, data corruption, or unauthorized access to sensitive information if exploited successfully.

Mitigation Strategies

Update SOEM to a version later than 2.0.0 to address the buffer overflow issue in multi-segment data transfers. Ensure network devices are configured to validate cumulative data sizes during transfers, not just initial sizes.
