Memory Corruption in SOEM Due to Buffer Overflow

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82945, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains a vulnerability during device configuration where a malicious device can cause memory corruption. The software writes configuration data to a fixed-size array without checking if the array index exceeds its maximum size of EC_MAXFMMU entries. A device presenting more than EC_MAXFMMU configuration blocks can force writes beyond the array boundary, corrupting adjacent memory structures and potentially disrupting subsequent operations.

CWE ID Description
CWE-129 The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array.
CWE-120 The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier. It occurs during device configuration when a malicious device writes configuration data to a fixed-size array without checking array bounds. The array has a maximum size of EC_MAXFMMU entries. If a device presents more than EC_MAXFMMU configuration blocks, it can force writes beyond the array, corrupting adjacent memory and disrupting operations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause memory corruption, leading to system crashes or unpredictable behavior. It may disrupt operations relying on SOEM, especially in industrial or embedded systems using EtherCAT devices. Attackers could exploit it to destabilize systems or trigger denial-of-service conditions.

Mitigation Strategies

Update SOEM to a version later than 2.0.0 to address the memory corruption issue in device configuration. Ensure all devices on the network are configured with EC_MAXFMMU-compliant blocks to prevent exceeding array limits.
