SOEM Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82947, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-26

Last updated on: 2026-10-26

Assigner: ENISA

Description

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier contains multiple vulnerabilities in frame processing where a malicious device can cause the master to read data outside allocated buffers. The software uses length and offset values from device messages without validating them against buffer sizes. This can cause the master to access invalid memory locations, potentially disclosing sensitive information or causing crashes.

CWE ID Description
CWE-129 The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array.
CWE-191 The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result.
CWE-125 The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.

Executive Summary

SOEM version 2.0.0 and earlier has multiple vulnerabilities in frame processing. A malicious device can manipulate length and offset values in messages to cause the master to read data outside allocated buffers. This happens because the software does not validate these values against buffer sizes, leading to potential invalid memory access.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow a malicious device to disclose sensitive information or cause the master system to crash by accessing invalid memory locations. It may lead to unauthorized data exposure or denial of service in systems using SOEM for communication.

Mitigation Strategies

Update SOEM to a version later than 2.0.0 to address buffer validation issues. Implement network segmentation to isolate devices using SOEM. Monitor network traffic for unusual frame processing patterns that may indicate exploitation attempts.
