SAML Login CSRF in Apache Airflow Amazon Provider

Description

Apache Airflow Amazon provider: the AWS auth manager's SAML login flow does not bind the authentication response to the browser that began it. The login handler discards the AuthnRequest ID and the callback validates the assertion without requiring a matching InResponseTo, so an unauthenticated attacker who can cause a victim to load a page can complete a SAML login in the victim's browser using the attacker's own assertion, silently logging the victim into the attacker's Airflow account. Subsequent work the victim performs lands in a session the attacker controls. Affects deployments using the AWS auth manager with SAML authentication. The victim needs only to visit an attacker-controlled page; no Airflow account or credential is required of the attacker. This is the same login-CSRF class fixed in the Keycloak auth manager as CVE-2026-40948. Users of apache-airflow-providers-amazon are recommended to upgrade to version 9.38.0, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Apache Airflow's AWS auth manager when using SAML authentication. The SAML login flow fails to bind the authentication response to the browser that started it. An attacker can trick a victim into visiting a malicious page, then use their own SAML assertion to silently log the victim into the attacker's Airflow account without credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache Airflow logs for unusual SAML authentication attempts or mismatched session bindings. Review browser cookies for unexpected session identifiers during SAML flows. Ensure the AWS auth manager's SAML login flow includes proper AuthnRequest ID binding.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to your Airflow instance, allowing them to perform actions under your identity. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized workflow execution, or further compromise of connected systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected Airflow deployments may face compliance violations, data breaches, and potential regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade apache-airflow-providers-amazon to version 9.38.0 or later. Disable IdP-initiated SSO flows unless explicitly required. Monitor SAML authentication logs for anomalies.
