Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Community Events WordPress plugin versions 1.4.9 to 1.5.9. It allows attackers to inject malicious scripts via the event submission form without authentication. The plugin fails to properly check authorization or use nonce validation and does not escape user-submitted data before displaying it in the admin dashboard or public calendar.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Community Events WordPress plugin version is between 1.4.9 and 1.5.9. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files for version details in /wp-content/plugins/community-events/

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious scripts that execute in the browser of an administrator reviewing event submissions. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or further compromise of the WordPress site. Users interacting with the public calendar might also be affected if the injected scripts run in their browsers.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and user privacy. If exploited, it could result in the exposure of sensitive user data, triggering compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Community Events plugin to version 1.6.0 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if an update is not possible. Review admin dashboard and public calendar for suspicious event submissions.
