Executive Summary

This is a time-of-check/time-of-use (TOCTOU) vulnerability in DPDK's vhost-crypto component. It involves a flaw where the indirect-descriptor snapshot incorrectly double-fetches the guest descriptor next index. The guest checks the index first but then modifies the live guest table, allowing an out-of-bounds write in the host backend. This can lead to unauthorized memory access by a malicious guest.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves monitoring for out-of-bounds memory access or crashes in DPDK vhost-crypto components. Check logs for segmentation faults or memory corruption errors in processes using virtio-crypto vhost-user devices. Use tools like strace or gdb to trace descriptor operations and detect double-fetch anomalies.

Impact Analysis

A malicious guest could exploit this to trigger unauthorized memory access, potentially causing data modification, system instability, or resource access. The high CVSS score (8.8) indicates significant impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Systems using virtio-crypto vhost-user devices are particularly affected.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability enables unauthorized memory access and potential data modification by a malicious guest, which could lead to exposure or corruption of sensitive data. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) by compromising confidentiality and integrity of personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid attaching untrusted virtio-crypto vhost-user backends to systems using DPDK's lib/vhost vhost-crypto component. This prevents malicious guests from exploiting the TOCTOU vulnerability.
