Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow flaw in DPDK's lib/vhost vhost-crypto component. It involves missing length checks on the RSA path and chain length checks that can overflow a host buffer in the vhost-crypto backend. An attacker with access to a guest system using a virtio-crypto vhost-user device could exploit this to trigger memory corruption or denial-of-service conditions.

Detection Guidance

Check if vhost-crypto is enabled in your DPDK configuration by inspecting running processes and loaded modules. Look for virtio-crypto vhost-user devices attached to guests. Commands like ps aux | grep vhost-crypto or lsmod | grep vhost can help identify active components.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes memory corruption, unauthorized code execution, or denial-of-service due to out-of-bounds write operations. Attackers could exploit this to crash systems or potentially gain control of affected hosts. The severity depends on whether vhost-crypto is enabled in your environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution or denial-of-service conditions due to memory corruption, which may violate data integrity and availability requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Buffer overflows in vhost-crypto components could expose sensitive data or disrupt critical services, potentially resulting in non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid attaching virtio-crypto vhost-user backends to untrusted guests. Disable vhost-crypto functionality if not required. Update DPDK to a patched version once available. Monitor for unusual memory corruption or denial-of-service events in host systems.
