Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) flaw in the rtMedia plugin for WordPress, BuddyPress, and bbPress. It allows users with a subscriber-level account or higher to upload media into another user's private album without permission. The media is then attributed to the victim user because the plugin does not verify if the uploader owns or has write access to the target album.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your rtMedia plugin version is below 4.7.14. Log in as a subscriber-level user and attempt to upload media to another user's private album. If successful, the vulnerability exists. Review media attribution logs for unauthorized changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could upload inappropriate or malicious media to your private albums, making it appear as if you posted it. This could damage your reputation, expose you to harassment, or lead to unintended sharing of sensitive content. The impact is limited to media attribution and album integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure or misattribution of content, potentially violating GDPR's data integrity principles or HIPAA's access controls. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance risks if private media is altered or attributed incorrectly.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the rtMedia plugin to version 4.7.14 or later. Review media upload logs for suspicious activity. Restrict subscriber-level user permissions if necessary. Monitor for unauthorized media attributions.
