Description

The Everest Forms – Contact Form, Payment Form, Quiz, Survey & Custom Form Builder with AI plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'evf_toast_type' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.6.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Exploitation requires the sibling evf_toast parameter to decode successfully via atob(), but this is a trivially attacker-controlled prerequisite.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Everest Forms WordPress plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'evf_toast_type' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into web pages that execute when a user clicks a crafted link. Exploitation requires the sibling 'evf_toast' parameter to decode via atob(), which attackers can control.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Everest Forms WordPress plugin. Detection involves checking the plugin version and inspecting WordPress sites for the vulnerable parameter. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' to check installed versions or scan for the 'evf_toast_type' parameter in site files.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could trick users into clicking a malicious link, leading to execution of arbitrary web scripts in their browsers. This could result in session hijacking, defacement of web pages, or theft of sensitive user data like cookies or credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. Organizations using the affected plugin may face compliance breaches if user data is compromised through exploitation.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Everest Forms plugin to the latest version beyond 3.6.2. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Monitor for suspicious activity or unauthorized script execution.
