Buffer Overflow in GUIX Font Resource Loader

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-91189, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-20

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

The GUIX binary resource loader never checks that a font page's glyph range is well formed. `gx_page_header_first_glyph` and `gx_page_header_last_glyph` are read verbatim from the file and only the upper bound of `last_glyph` is validated, so a page declaring `first_glyph > last_glyph` makes `last - first + 1` underflow to a very large unsigned count. That count is multiplied by a glyph record size to reserve the load buffer, and the multiply is unchecked, so it wraps to a small value and the loader allocates a buffer far smaller than the data it is about to write. The load pass then recomputes the count in a narrower type and writes attacker-controlled glyph records into the undersized buffer.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.
CWE-787 The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-680 The product performs a calculation to determine how much memory to allocate, but an integer overflow can occur that causes less memory to be allocated than expected, leading to a buffer overflow.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the GUIX binary resource loader in Eclipse ThreadX. It occurs when loading untrusted font or theme files. The loader fails to validate glyph ranges, allowing an attacker to craft a malformed file where the first glyph index exceeds the last glyph index. This causes an integer underflow, leading to a miscalculation of the required buffer size. The loader then reserves a far smaller buffer than needed, resulting in a heap out-of-bounds write when writing glyph records.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the GUIX version and configuration. Use commands like 'guix --version' to verify if your system runs a vulnerable version (up to 6.5.1.202602a). Inspect font or theme files for malformed glyph ranges where first_glyph exceeds last_glyph. Enable extended-Unicode and GX_BINARY_RESOURCE_SUPPORT flags to confirm exposure.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to controlled heap corruption and potential control-flow hijacking. An attacker could overwrite adjacent memory, including function pointers, enabling them to execute arbitrary code. On 32-bit ARM builds, this is exploitable, while on 64-bit builds, it is not due to larger glyph record sizes. It may also cause out-of-bounds reads during rendering.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GUIX to version 6.5.2.202603 or later, which includes patches for glyph range validation and buffer reservation checks. Avoid loading binary resource files from untrusted sources. Disable GX_BINARY_RESOURCE_SUPPORT if binary resources are unnecessary. Monitor for suspicious memory corruption or crashes in GUIX applications.
