CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The WX Subscribe WordPress plugin up to version 1.2.1 has a flaw where it does not properly sanitize and escape a parameter called 'attach' before using it in a SQL query. This allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious SQL commands, potentially accessing or manipulating the database.

Detection Guidance

Check if the WX Subscribe plugin version 1.2.1 or earlier is installed on your WordPress site. Look for unauthenticated SQL injection attempts targeting the 'attach' parameter in SQL queries.

Impact Analysis

If your WordPress site uses this plugin without a configured payment key, attackers could exploit this to execute arbitrary SQL commands. This may lead to unauthorized data access, data deletion, or other malicious database operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exposure of sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations could face penalties if such breaches occur due to unpatched vulnerabilities.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WX Subscribe plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL queries targeting the 'attach' parameter.
