Description

The Webheadcoder Multi-Step Forms for Contact Form 7 plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'l10n_print_after' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Successful exploitation requires that the targeted site has at least one Contact Form 7 form configured with a [multistep] form-tag, as the canonicalization introduced in version 4.7 blocks the attack path on non-multistep forms.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Webheadcoder Multi-Step Forms for Contact Form 7 WordPress plugin up to version 4.7. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'l10n_print_after' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when a user clicks a crafted link. Exploitation requires a site with a Contact Form 7 form configured using a [multistep] form-tag.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into clicking a malicious link, leading to unauthorized script execution in your browser. This may allow theft of session cookies, login credentials, or sensitive data displayed on the page. It could also enable actions like redirecting you to phishing sites or performing unwanted actions on your behalf.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for safeguarding protected health information. Organizations may face compliance breaches if user data is compromised through such attacks.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Webheadcoder Multi-Step Forms for Contact Form 7 plugin to version 4.7.1 or later to address the XSS vulnerability.
  • Ensure input validation is enabled to reject null or undefined values and sanitize posted data.
  • Verify that conditional fields refresh properly and cookie attributes are set securely.
